SHSAT math: what the section tests, and where the points hide

Half the exam and half the composite: 50 questions worth up to 350 scaled points, at a pace of under two minutes each. The content is middle-school mathematics — what makes it hard is the wording, the multi-step setups, and a question type with no choices to fall back on.

The five content areas

These mirror how our practice bank of over a thousand original math questions is organised, so a weak area found in the diagnostic maps straight onto a practice queue.

Number sense

Fractions, ratios, percents, exponents and number properties. The largest share of the section, and the area where speed is built or lost — almost every other topic leans on it.

Algebra

Equations, inequalities, expressions and functions. Usually mechanical once set up — the trap is setting up the wrong equation from a wordy prompt.

Geometry

Angles, area, volume, coordinate geometry and similarity. Formula recall matters less than seeing which formula the diagram is hiding.

Word problems

Rate, work, mixture and multi-step reasoning. The smallest pool but the highest cost per mistake: one misread sentence sinks two minutes and the answer with it.

Probability & statistics

Mean, median, mode, counting and probability. Reliably learnable — most students who lose points here simply never practised it as its own topic.

Grid-ins: the questions with no safety net

  • A grid-in gives you no choices: you compute the answer and type it in. There is nothing to eliminate, no way to test options backwards, and no partial credit for being close.
  • This is where the easiest points are lost — not on hard mathematics, but on arithmetic slips that four multiple-choice options would have caught. A wrong sign or a misplaced decimal survives all the way to the grid.
  • The habit that fixes it is cheap: after computing, re-read the question's last line and check the answer is the thing actually asked for. Our bank includes a dedicated grid-in set so the format itself stops being a surprise.

How prepared students lose math points

  • Pace, not knowledge. Under two minutes per question means a problem that takes four minutes costs you a question you knew how to do. Timed practice is the only place pace is learned.
  • Doing the mathematics right and answering the wrong question — the prompt asked for the difference, the student gave a value. Word problems and grid-ins punish this hardest.
  • Practising only the comfortable topics. A student who loves algebra and avoids probability is choosing where their points come from — the exam does not offer that choice.

A practice order that works

Diagnose first — ten minutes finds the two or three areas actually costing points. Practise those by topic, in timed sets, until the accuracy trend moves. Then spend a full-length mock to see whether the section score followed. Guessing which topic is weak wastes the scarcest resource a fall test date leaves you: weeks.

The official Fall 2026 SHSAT will be computer-adaptive. SHSATus currently provides fixed-form digital practice based on DOE-published content areas and question types. It does not reproduce the DOE's adaptive item-selection or scoring algorithm.
