Math or ELA First? Where SHSAT Prep Should Start

Most families reach this question in the first week or two. Your child works through some practice, one half comes out visibly worse than the other, and the sensible next thought is: let us fix that one first. The instinct is right. What families usually do with it is what costs them.

The two ways this normally gets decided

The first is by feel — whichever subject produced the worse afternoon becomes the focus. The trouble is that a bad afternoon is noisy. A tired child, an unfamiliar question type, a passage about a topic they happened to find dull: any of these can make one half look broken when it is not.

The second is quieter, and more common than anyone admits: families work on the subject the parent can help with. If you are comfortable with fractions, math practice gets supervised, asked about and encouraged. Reading gets a nod. Nothing about that choice is dishonest — it is just that the half getting attention is the half you can see, not the half losing the most points.

Work from the gap, not from the subject

"Math" and "ELA" are too big to be the unit of a plan. Neither is a skill. Each is a container for several skills that behave differently, get taught at different times, and fail for different reasons. A child can be strong at algebra and lose steadily on geometry; another can read well and still lose points on revising and editing, which is closer to a rules test than a reading test.

So the useful question is not which half is weaker. It is which topics inside each half are costing the most points. The asymmetry almost nobody mentions

Here is the part that changes the answer. The two halves do not improve at the same speed.

Math gaps are usually discrete. A student who has never been taught how to handle a ratio problem can be taught ratios, practice a dozen of them, and own that topic in a week. The gap has edges. You can see it close, and the score moves in visible steps.

Reading comprehension has no edges. It grows out of accumulated reading — vocabulary met in context, arguments followed to their end, the habit of holding a long paragraph in your head. That growth is real and it is slow. Nobody fixes reading in a week, and a child who reads steadily for months arrives at the exam with an advantage that cannot be assembled at the end.

Revising and editing sits between the two. It is rule-based, so it responds more like math: learnable in defined pieces, and often the fastest points available on the ELA side.

The practical consequence runs against the instinct. The half that moves slowest should start earliest. Saving reading for later is saving the one thing that cannot be caught up.

So the answer is usually "both, but not equally"

Not a split down the middle, and not one subject parked while the other gets fixed. Give each half the shape that suits how it improves:

  • Math gets the concentrated blocks. Pick the weakest one or two topics from the report, learn them properly, then drill that specific type until the accuracy trend moves. Then pick the next one. Concentration is what makes a discrete gap close.
  • Reading gets the daily trickle. Twenty minutes of real reading most days, plus a passage set a couple of times a week. It will not produce a dramatic week. It produces a different reader by the time the exam matters.
  • Revising and editing gets small, regular doses. A handful of items at a time, learning the rule behind each miss rather than the answer. These are the ELA points that come back fastest.

Four profiles, four different answers

Weak math, comfortable reader. The clearest case for concentrated math blocks. Keep reading ticking over anyway — an advantage is only an advantage if it survives the months of math.

Weak reading, strong at math. The one most often handled backwards. Math is where the visible wins are, so it eats the calendar and reading stays where it was. Start reading now, keep math on maintenance, and accept that this half reports progress in months rather than weeks.

Weak in both. Do not split attention three ways. Take the single weakest topic on the report, close it, and let the daily reading run underneath. One closed gap beats four half-closed ones, and the early wins are what keep a child in the routine at all.

Strong in both. The work stops being about gaps and becomes about pace and precision under time — timed sets, and the careless-slip patterns that only show up when the clock is running.

How to tell it is working — and when to switch

The signal is not "we finished the geometry chapter." It is that the topic which was losing the most points is no longer at the top of the list. Getting that signal means reviewing what went wrong rather than only counting what was done; reviewing mistakes by cause is what turns a week of practice into a decision about next week.

Re-check the shortlist every few weeks, not every day. Topic order moves slowly, and reacting to one bad session is how a plan turns into a series of fresh starts.
